Overall, Nicholas & Alexandra is a masterpiece. It is a very enjoyable, intriguing, insightful, and fascinating read about an era of history that most people, including the author of this review, have probably not been introduced to before.
Poythress has provided us with an effective treatment of Old Testament law and how our current legal system matches up.
If you are a serious student of the Word and are any bit at all concerned with rightly handling the Word of God, this book is a must-read. It may be hard and it may not be pleasant, but the resulting trade-off—that God’s Word will be handled with the care and concern that it demands—will be more than worth it.
Nash’s work is certainly worth reading, but in my opinion, it doesn’t provide an adequate foundation for a beginner to start with.
