A Prayer: Do Not Go Down To Egypt

“For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” – Isaiah 30:15

“And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. Then you will defile your carved idols overlaid with silver and your gold-plated metal images. You will scatter them as unclean things. You will say to them, ‘Be gone!'” – Isaiah 30:21-22 (emphasis added)

At the sound of Your call,

The sound of Your grace,

The sound of Your command,

Your people defile their idols.

You stretch out Your hand, revealing Your might–

You give us eyes to see You, our Teacher.

You beckon us and we return, for You are our Shepherd,

Your sheep respond in obedience.

When You give us eyes to see The Holy One,

Our hands release freely the perverseness we have clenched onto,

We lift them up in surrender,

Remembering Your majesty that none other can compete with.

We consult man, forgetting they are made and destroyed by You.

We are easily deceived,

Dumb sheep who try and steer our own way without the help of our Teacher.

We busy ourselves…suppressing truth, Your whispers can’t be heard.

Swift to flee and disregard The word’s of Life,

We are led down to Egypt trusting in a new master,

Forgetting the harsh destruction that follows his way.

It is there that You remind us, when we have had enough,

That You’ve been doing what we cannot; waiting.

Waiting to be gracious to us,

You calm and hush us when sin has caused our hearts to be frantic and fearful–

We are quieted by Your love.

Egypt’s help is worthless and empty.

Sin’s demise is eminant, You are a God of justice;

Soon Your flock will dwell forever secure,

Never desiring to leave for Egypt again
